MILFORD GRAVES AND DON PULLEN In Concert At Yale University (Insanely rare original 1966 US two-part limited edition private press vinyl LP on the white deep groove PGI label from the drummer Milford Graves (New York Art Quartet/Albert Ayler/Sonny Sharrock) and pianist Don Pullen (Albert Ayler/Charles Mingus), the first volume in the two-volume series and one of America's first DIY Free Jazz records. It's a seminal work of free-jazz improvisation, highly praised by jazz bible DownbeatMagazine and included in Thurston Moore's recent "top ten from the jazz underground" chart. Housed in a unique sleeve - all copies were hand painted by either Milford or Don - and no two are the same. If that's not rare enough, this copy comes complete with the typewritten A4 insert! See 'more info' for condition details... PG-286)
TRACKLISTING AND EXTRA INFORMATION
A. P.G. I
B. P.G. II
Milford and Graves had previously worked with saxophonist and clarinettist Giusseppi Logan, with whom they had recorded two LPs in 1965 for ESP Disk. Graves was already an imposing presence in free music, with advances in technique and using the snare as an accent rather than beat-keeper. Pullen (who would go on to have an illustrious career with Charles Mingus) shows he's also no slouch in the technique department, with unrestrained bursts of activity up and down the keys. Not for the faint-hearted! The vinyl is impossibly rare, especially as a first issue. A second volume titled Nommo was subsequently issued, and it too is highly prized. This is truly one of the holy grails of free music. It is as vital and challenging today as it was more than five decades ago.
Condition:
The hand painted heavyweight textured card picture sleeve shows a beautiful abstract image, mostly green on one side and mainly (unpainted) black on the other half. The sleeve shows light wear, mainly to the edges, with a light dink to the bottom corner, whilst the reverse remains unpainted. The typewritten A4 insert is also included, typed in red ink, with a 'Prudential ppp Erasable' watermark.
The labels on the disc remain clean with minimal spindlewear. (A: PG-287 LW/B: PG-288 LW) The heavyweight (160 gram) vinyl grades VG/EX - visually there are just a few faint cosmetic / surface scuffs, typical of private pressings of this era. Highly recommended - we've never had a copy in over thirty years - when will you see another?
